Misty mountain romance

One of the misty visas of the Tam Dao mountain range in Vinh Phuc Province
Some 86 kilometers north of Hanoi, the Tam Dao mountain range is an ideal vacation spot with fresh air, natural landscapes and a quiet romantic atmosphere.

Driving about an hour from Hanoi, you will reach Phuc Yen Town of Vinh Phuc Province. Follow the zigzagging road along the foot of the mountains for another half an hour. Foggy Tam Dao lies under the shadows of pine trees if you visit in autumn and winter.

At an elevation of more than 1,000 meters above sea level, the weather in Tam Dao is similar to Sapa in Lao Cai Province, which means tourists can experience four seasons in one day. The day starts with spring winds, gets hot in the middle of the day like in summer, has the mild weather of autumn when it gets dark and is rather cold at night like in winter.

Visitors should keep their cameras ready to capture all of the beauty of Tam Dao mountains – the stunning green valleys, hills and waterfalls. Places not to be missed include Thac Bac (Silver Falls), Suoi Tien (Goddess’ stream), Cau Hen Ho (Dating Bridge), Cong Troi (Heaven’s gate), Den Thanh Tran (Tran Hung Dao Temple), and the Tam Dao National Park.

The Tam Dao National Park is one of the major attractions of the area. Recognized in March 1996 and with a total area of about 369 square kilometers, it is one of the largest national parks in Vietnam, home to many rare species of flora and fauna.

The area, which is 1,529 meters above sea level, is rich in biodiversity and has species found in other ecosystems in the region, ranging from the rainforests of Southeast Asia to the alpine forests of the eastern Himalayas.

More than 190,000 people of six different ethnic groups live in the immediate surroundings of the park. They use the national park for grazing and gathering firewood, bamboo and edible and medicinal plants, as well as collecting water for drinking and irrigation.

Every winter, Tam Dao National Park becomes an ideal spot for bird watchers as many species of migrating birds stop over before heading off to their final destination.
