Floral street welcomes spring to HCMC

The Nguyen Hue avenue of HCMC is undergoing a major transformation to become a floral street to welcome the nation’s biggest festival – Tet (Lunar New Year), which will fall in late January this year.

This year’s floral festival is the sixth ever so far hosted by the HCMC People’s Committee and financed by the city’s businesses. It has become the city’s most awaited festival every spring.

About 100,000 pots of flowers and bonsai will be brought in from different regions nationwide, not including fresh flowers supplied by flower growing centres in Dalat central highlands city and the southwestern region, to decorate the 800m long road.

The one-way floral road will begin with a garden of 100 ancient trees of apricot trees with yellow flowers, the traditional Tet flower in the southern region.

The road then will be divided into seven sections with different themes depicting Vietnam’s countryside with stacks of yellow straw, green bamboo trees, rice fields, make-shift bridges crossing small canals.

The road will ends at the Bach Dang Port with a field of green watermelon plants and a 5m high artificial watermelon fruit.

In addition to various arts and music performances along the floral road, the festival also includes a 15-minute firework in the New Year’s eve.

Picturesque Pu Mat

Tourists enjoy a boat trip in Pu Mat National Park in the central province of Nghe An.
With a rich ecosystem of diverse flora and fauna, beautiful scenery and intriguing historical sites, Pu Mat National Park is an ideal tourist destination year-round.

In the ethnic Thai language, “Pu Mat” means “high steep slopes.” It is considered the largest area in the country in terms of the biodiversity of tropical and subtropical forests in the northern Truong Son Range. Like other national parks in Vietnam, Pu Mat National Park offers great opportunities for ecotourism.

Pu Mat is situated on the eastern side of the Truong Son Range along the Vietnam-Laos border. It lies in the southwest of central Nghe An Province, 120 kilometers from Vinh Town and covers more than 91,100 hectares.

The park sits at an altitude ranging from 200-1,814 meters. It has nearly 2,500 plant species and is home to 727 animal species. In particular, the park is home to rare animals such as a species of deer known as sao la (Pseudoryx nghetinhensis), a species of rabbit known as tho van (Nesolagus timminsi), and a species of bird known as niec co hung (Aceros nipalensis).

After Pu Mat National Park was certified by UNESCO as a world heritage site in November 2007, the People’s Committee of Nghe An Province turned part of it into a tourist site called Khe Kem Waterfall Tourist Resort. Currently, the resort at Pu Mat National Park has around 40 rooms and offers an array of services to serve tourists.

Scenic spots that visitors should not omit include Khe Kem Waterfall, Oc Cave, Mo Vit Yard, and Giang River. In addition, several historical sites are also places of great interest. Included is Ma Nhai Stele – a site commemorating the Tran Dynasty army’s triumph over Mongol invaders of the China’s Yuan Dynasty nearly 700 years ago; and Tra Lan Citadel where the resistance against Ming invaders took place in the 15th century.

High in Khau Vai

The festive atmosphere of Khau Vai market in northern Ha Giang Province
The Khau Vai market festival brings not only goods and wares to the remote mountain commune in northern Vietnam, but also love and celebration.

Locals wait for the festival – held on the 27th day of the third Lunar month (often falling in May) in Ha Giang Province’s Khau Vai Commune, Meo Vac District – all year long.

The northernmost province is home to a variety of ethnic minority groups including the Giay, Nung and Muong peoples.

The Khau Vai market is a cultural holiday here, where groups from as far as Cao Bang Province get together to share commerce and fun.

According to legend, the market dates back to the unrequited love between a young boy and girl. They fell deeply in love but were from different tribes that forbade them to be together. A bitter quarrel erupted between the two families and the couple was forced to end the affair.

Unable to bear the thought of never seeing each other again, they decided to meet on the same day every year in Khau Vai. Today, the site of the forbidden rendezvous is home to the love market.

Youngsters travel to the market hoping to find their future spouses while old friends meet up after a year apart and new friends are made.

The social event of the year, revelers chat over sticky rice, grilled cassava and rice dumplings while celebrations of romantic song and dance last all night long.

Ethnic costumes and jewelry – still worn by most local women – traditional instruments and art are all on display at the market, adding splashes of color everywhere you look.

Home stays are available in the tiny enclave near the Chinese border. Goodwill abounds, as does some of the most stunning scenery Vietnam has to offer – jarring limestone cliffs jutting out into the sky, karsts climbing up over rivers to form canyons and valleys made of rock and lush green forest.

Cultural Tet fete for tourists

Ba Ria-Vung Tau (VNA) - A cultural tourism festival welcoming the Lunar New Year will be organised in the southern coastal province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau between January 22 and February 2, 2009.

It will introduce tourism, history, tradition and culture via various activities, according to Ho Van Nien, vice chairman of the provincial People’s Committee.

The festival will be opened by a ceremony held at the Imperial Hotel, the first five-star hotel in the province, on January 26, 2009, the first day of the lunar calendar. It will include a comedy performance and dragon dance. The organising board will give presents to visitors.

A performance themed Loc An - Legend of Ships held on January 30 by Dat Do district’s local government in cooperation with Xuyen Moc district will be the highlight of the festival. The ceremony commemorates 150 years of resistance by locals against invaders, focusing on the 45 years that legendary ships without number plates transported weapons and goods for the battlefield.

Whenever the troops sailed forth, nearly one tonne of explosives were set on the ships; if they were discovered and attacked, they would destroy the ship to keep the resistance’s secrets, according to veteran Tran Phong, who served on these ships.

A cannon launching ceremony held to recall sacrifices of soldiers and sailors of non-number plated ships will be broadcast live on Vietnam Television. On the same day, Dat Do district’s authorities will hold the “banh tet” festival (cylindrical glutinous rice cake filled with green bean and pork) introducing the specialities of the region. To greet the new year, 2,009 “banh tet” weighing 5,000kg will be displayed, setting a new Vietnamese Guinness record.

This year, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will host a ceremony commemorating Nguyen Thi Ria (1665-1759), the founder of the province, on February 1 in Long Hai town’s Long Dien district.

Ria reclaimed virgin land and founded many districts in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province. She organised people to build bridges and roads. When she died at the age of 94 without any heirs, she left her fortune to the poor.

Societe dus Etudes Indochinoises and Ecole Francaise d’Extreme Orient have done many studies on her and her links with the province.

In the past, the People’s Committee restored her grave and erected a statue of her at the foot of Dinh Co Mountain.

During the festival, tourists can join many traditional folk games including tug of war, kite-flying, coracle racing and human chess. They can also enter sports competitions in football and volleyball.

There will be various performances including lion and dragon dances, and dummy airplane performances.

With the aim of popularising the local traditional culture, the organising board will open exhibitions on calligraphy and photography.

On the occasion, many farm trips will be launched bringing tourists a chance to understand nature and human life in the province.

A less beaten path

A misty and peaceful bend in the road at the Dong Van Plateau in Ha Giang Province
Tourism development has yet to taint the scenic charms of Vietnam’s northernmost area.

Ha Giang Province’s Dong Van District features stunning vistas of plateaus framed by jagged rocks and wistful passes through lush green mountains without the distractions of tour buses, travel groups, large hotels or anything resembling a tourist trap.

The area, 350 kilometers north of Hanoi, is characterized by limestone plateaus, karst outcroppings and hospitable people, 1,025 meters above sea level.

Dong Van Plateau’s hidden grottoes, persimmon orchards and unexploited forests dotted with multicolored orchids are a world away from anything most travelers have ever seen.

Riding in and out of dense forests above valleys and rivers is like traveling on a different planet. A few rural homes seen in the distance, sometimes 10-20 kilometers away, are the only evidence of any inhabitants. A rice terrace here and there and a lonely road or two are the only changes the terrain has sustained in thousands of years.

A trip to the pass on an early Sunday morning provides a glimpse into the lives of the Dao, H’Mong and Tay people at the Dong Van Market. The locals here make a hard living off rough terrain in the rocky highlands, using small caves and stone holes for cultivation.

Much of the soil in Dong Van is infertile and growing crops and raising livestock is no easy task. Yet the groups sell a variety of abundant local specialties such as mint honey and free-range chickens on the roadside.

An indispensible part of daily life here, the area’s jagged rocks are used to build homes, fences, mills and benches.

The result is a pastoral landscape of gorgeous stone peaking out from corn fields mixed with the bright colors of traditional clothing worn by the local women.

Ma Pi Leng Pass, located between Meo Vac Commune and Dong Van, is a 15-kilometer canyon road above the Nho Que River, which weaves its way like a silver ribbon through limestone ravines.

The pass’ peak is aptly named Cong Troi (Heaven’s Gate), and is the best place to enjoy a panoramic view of the valley below, particularly on a late afternoon when you can see a beautiful sunset overlooking the river.

Tourism’s urgent plan to attract more visitors in 2009

A nationwide promotion is one of the urgent measures being taken by the tourism sector to stimulate tourism in order to achieve the sector’s target of welcoming 4.5 million foreign tourists in 2009.

Hotels have committed to reducing their service prices by 30-50%, following implementation of the programme from January to September, said Mr. Tran Chien Thang, director of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) at a press briefing in Hanoi on January 5.

The national carrier, Vietnam Airlines, also pledged to provide special ticket offers, decreasing price by 30-50%, for both domestic and international flights.

Other service suppliers have committed to offering price reductions to attract more visitors.

The VNAT will boost promotion campaign via the Internet and the mass media both at home and abroad, and launch the programme’s official website.

Big tourism events such as the ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) scheduled for early January in Hanoi, is considered as the focus of the programme.

The VNAT will continue to study domestic and international markets to launch new tours as well as offering farmtrip and presstrip from a range of countries to Vietnam.

At present, 37 travel agencies, 61 hotels, 3 transporters and 14 souvenir shops join the programme, offering 99 discounted products. “This is an opportunity for businesses to work together to build a trademark for Vietnam’s tourism sector,” Mr. Thang said.

Ben Thanh Tourist says will sell tours online in 2009

Ben Thanh Tourist will start selling tours online from after the first quarter of 2009, which will be made possible owing to a recent cooperation agreement the travel firm signed with Vietcombank and an IT solution provider.

Than Hai Thanh, general director of Ben Thanh Tourist, told the Daily that his company, Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam (Vietcombank) and OnePay had inked the agreement to this effect.

The travel firm expects to sell tours and other services online via the website http://www.benthanhtourist.com in 2009, he said, adding his company would spend VND 1 billion to improve the website and boost the internet connection speed.

OnePay will provide technology solution and software for the company’s online tour selling website, while Vietcombank will help with customers’ payment.

“Two main problems that prevent travel firms from selling tours online are technology and online payment. The two partners will help us resolve the problems,” he said.

The tour operator expects a good start with e-commerce after the first quarter of next year. “We expect over 10% of our customers will buy tours online in the first year since the service launch,” Thanh said, explaining that “more and more people want to buy tours and travel services online. We should improve our service to catch up with the demand.”

Ben Thanh Tourist has in the year to date supplied services to nearly 130,000 travelers. These include over 58,350 international travelers, over 6,000 outbound travelers, and nearly 65,000 people buying domestic tours. The company obtained total revenue of VND 370 billion, up 2% against 2007.

Thanh said that 2009 would be more difficult for the tourism sector.

Therefore, apart from the above e-commerce solution to give better convenience to travelers, Ben Thanh Tourist is also expected to promote budget tours. It will also launch more regional tours that take in many destinations in the ASEAN region instead of tours to long-haul destinations.

He said that for the inbound sector, the tour prices next year would be discounted by around 10% to 15%.

Apart from travel service, the State-owned company also operates hotels, resorts and restaurants in HCMC and other cities in the country. It also holds stakes in some other hotels and building projects in HCMC such as the 35-story building at 5 Me Linh Square and the 19-story building at 172-174 Ky Con in HCMC’s District 1, Tropicana in Long Hai Beach, and Park View in the ancient Hue City.

Misty mountain romance

One of the misty visas of the Tam Dao mountain range in Vinh Phuc Province
Some 86 kilometers north of Hanoi, the Tam Dao mountain range is an ideal vacation spot with fresh air, natural landscapes and a quiet romantic atmosphere.

Driving about an hour from Hanoi, you will reach Phuc Yen Town of Vinh Phuc Province. Follow the zigzagging road along the foot of the mountains for another half an hour. Foggy Tam Dao lies under the shadows of pine trees if you visit in autumn and winter.

At an elevation of more than 1,000 meters above sea level, the weather in Tam Dao is similar to Sapa in Lao Cai Province, which means tourists can experience four seasons in one day. The day starts with spring winds, gets hot in the middle of the day like in summer, has the mild weather of autumn when it gets dark and is rather cold at night like in winter.

Visitors should keep their cameras ready to capture all of the beauty of Tam Dao mountains – the stunning green valleys, hills and waterfalls. Places not to be missed include Thac Bac (Silver Falls), Suoi Tien (Goddess’ stream), Cau Hen Ho (Dating Bridge), Cong Troi (Heaven’s gate), Den Thanh Tran (Tran Hung Dao Temple), and the Tam Dao National Park.

The Tam Dao National Park is one of the major attractions of the area. Recognized in March 1996 and with a total area of about 369 square kilometers, it is one of the largest national parks in Vietnam, home to many rare species of flora and fauna.

The area, which is 1,529 meters above sea level, is rich in biodiversity and has species found in other ecosystems in the region, ranging from the rainforests of Southeast Asia to the alpine forests of the eastern Himalayas.

More than 190,000 people of six different ethnic groups live in the immediate surroundings of the park. They use the national park for grazing and gathering firewood, bamboo and edible and medicinal plants, as well as collecting water for drinking and irrigation.

Every winter, Tam Dao National Park becomes an ideal spot for bird watchers as many species of migrating birds stop over before heading off to their final destination.

PM endorses $16 mil. project to preserve world heritage site

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung Wednesday approved a VND282 billion ($16 million) project to preserve a cultural heritage site in central Quang Nam Province.

My Son, 69 km southwest of Da Nang City, is thought to be a sacred Cham site, and contains the remains of many temples built by the Hindu Champa kings between the fourth and 13th centuries.

The project, for which funds will be drawn from the government budget and donations from local and foreign individuals and organizations, is scheduled to be completed in 2020.

The project includes deactivating bombs, landmines and other unexploded ordnance, detoxification, enforcing the structures and repairing damage.

French archaeologist Henri Parmentier discovered the My Son complex in 1898.

In 1999, UNESCO recognized My Son, along with the nearby ancient town of Hoi An, as world heritage sites – two of only 50 such sites in the world.

Hot rock cuisine

Lamb and squid grilling on a hot stone at the Da Nuong Restaurant
An ancient method of cooking food on stone has been refined at Da Nuong Restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City.

Located near the September 23rd Park and the city’s backpacker area, the restaurant is famous among tourists and local gourmets for its exotic and delicious hot rock menu.

Grilling food on stone can be traced back to the Ancient Egyptians and Vikings, but now this unique dining experience is available in Ho Chi Minh City, with natural volcanic stones imported from Australia.

According to the owner, these stones, selected for their high heat retention, are heated to 400 degrees Celsius in a special oven. The hot rectangular rocks are brought to the table, along with the meat and vegetables that have been ordered and a selection of condiments such as garlic, pepper and chili.

The menu includes pork, lamb, chicken, shrimp and cuttlefish, seasoned with a range of herbs and spices such as citronella, pepper and salt. The “dry cooking” method sears the food without burning it, sealing in all the nutrients. This kind of dinner also offers clean and healthy fare with no fat or oils.

At Da Nuong, guests can enjoy a meal freshly grilled to their personal taste - rare, medium or well-done. Another advantage of the volcanic stone is that it can retain heat for 20 to 35 minutes, long enough for diners to eat at leisure with every bite as hot as the first. With specialties such as cha ca da nong (fish fried on hot stone) and bo nuong da nong (steak grilled on hot stone), Da Nuong Restaurant is a popular place to unwind and enjoy sensational square meals.

An interesting change from other cuisines, this kind of grill really captures the interest of HCMC food lovers.

The dishes range from VND40,000 to VND170,000 (US$2.36-10) at 54 Nguyen Van Trang Street, District 1.
