Key tourism route largely unknown to travelers

Nearly half of international travelers to Vietnam have not learned of a tourism route named the East-West Economic Corridor which stretches 1,450 kilometers from Vietnam's central city of Danang to Laos and Thailand, shows a survey.

An expert with a team making the survey said that her team had interviewed international travelers in Vietnam, tour guides, tour operators, and travel agents. Around 45% of those people said they did not know the route while nearly 65% of the travelers said that they wanted to explore it.

Most respondents said they searched for information about the corridor via guidebooks Lonely Planet and Guide du Routard and some websites like Google.com or Hostelworld.com, among others.

The survey was presented last week in Hue City in a seminar convened to promote the East-West Economic Corridor. The Tourism Faculty of Hue University and the Netherlands Development Organization (SNV) organized the seminar.

The survey showed that the guests had demands to explore culture, history, nature, and exchange with the local community.

Travelers had interest in handicraft products. They were pleased with high-class bus services and imperial boats but complained about food safety, high prices of services like cyclo, and unprofessional tour guides.

Most tourists traveling on the route were Thai elderly people who traveled in groups of some 30 people each. Around 2% of them have returned to Vietnam for the second time.

About spending, the survey found that three-fourths of the guests who traveled to the north of the central region were spending less than USD 500 per day, while over half of them chose budget hotels with an average rate of USD 20 per night.

The survey group proposed local tourism authorities improve human resources, build tourist information centers and websites to promote the route's image.

Timeless clay village

A craftsman makes a pottery vase in Bac Ninh’s Phu Lang Village
A traditional pottery village in northern Bac Ninh Province creates pieces that capture the heart and soul of Vietnam.

Phu Lang is a must-see for tourists who travel to Bac Ninh Province to admire its natural surroundings and ancient houses.

At the foot of the majestic Son Mountain on the banks of the Cau River, only 18 kilometers northeast of Bac Ninh Town and 60 kilometers from Hanoi, the village is known nationally and internationally for its handicrafts.

The village has been making pottery for 800 years since its patron Luu Phong Tu taught the locals the techniques in the 13th century. About half the residents produce clay pots, jars and a multitude of other clay products.

The products of Phu Lang are much sought-after by customers throughout the country due to their durability, diversity and unique enamel colors of eel-skin brown, purple, pink, black, yellow and frog-skin green.

Pots are baked in kilns at initial temperatures of 600 degrees centigrade, rising gradually to around 1,200 Celsius degrees. Once the clay has cooled, potters add their trademark coat of thick eel-skin brown enamel, which dries to the brownish-yellowish hue of an eel’s stomach.

Apart from its spectacular scenery, Phu Lang Village is a beauty spot in its own right. The houses have moss-green tiles, and the village roads are lined with a medley of ceramic goods propped against the shop fronts.

Many tourists like travelling to the village because they have a chance to make ceramics themselves. Clay, the material used to make ceramics, is transported to the village by boat. Tourists can stay at villagers’ homes to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and contemplate the kilns along the waters edge or the low hills near the dreamy Cau River.

“The village is a good place not only because you can meet and make friends with the locals and make original gifts for friends and relatives,” one foreign visitor said. “It’s also a place to relax, where you can enjoy the natural beauty and nostalgic moments of the past in old buildings."

Beef on the tile

A diner grills beef on a metal “tile” in a restaurant in Soc Trang Province
Traditionally grilled on a clay tile, the bo nuong ngoi is a beef dish very specific to Soc Trang Province.

Grilled beef is a dish that one can probably get in most places in Vietnam, but in Soc Trang Province, it is a specialty called bo nuong ngoi (grilled-on-tile beef).

Slices of soft beef are spiced with honey, minced garlic, red onion and lemon grass, and then grilled on a clay tile placed over red-hot coals.

A sheet of stainless steel shaped like a tile has replaced the traditional clay tiles these days in the interests of hygiene and ease of cleaning up. This “tile” conducts the heat quickly, so it takes less time to grill beef on it.

At a restaurant that serves bo nuong ngoi in Soc Trang, diners are provided with a stove with red-hot coals, a dish of spiced beef, a bowl of cooking oil, a bowl of sauce, and dishes of rice vermicelli, rice paper, fresh vegetables, cucumber, star fruit, green banana, and pineapple. If they wish, the customers can grill the beef by themselves, taking care to turn it regularly and baste it with some oil.

To enjoy the dish to its fullest, roll the grilled beef together with vegetables, star fruit, banana, cucumber, pineapple and rice vermicelli in a sheet of rice paper, and dip the roll into the sauce.

At some restaurants, rice vermicelli is replaced with banh hoi (a kind of rice noodle), a substitute that does not change the flavor of the dish.

Diners will notice that the dish has different flavors at different restaurants. This is because each restaurant has its own touch to spice the beef and make the sauce. The tastiest sauce is one that is garnished with minced pineapple.

The grilled-on-tile beef is only available in Soc Trang. Each serving for two people costs VND40,000-50,000 (US$2.4-2.9), and it is served at many restaurants in the Mekong Delta province. According to local residents, the restaurant in My Xuyen District on 64 Phan Boi Chau St., My Xuyen Town, is the best of them all.

Hot and spicy

A mouth-watering bowl of ca ri cha (cha curry) served with bread in An Giang Province
A fiery Cham curry is a must for visitors to Cham villages in the Mekong Delta’s An Giang and Soc Trang provinces and the central region’s Binh Thuan and Ninh Thuan provinces.

Cari cha (cha curry) is a Cham dish, usually served with com ni (rice cooked with coconut juice and spices).

Cha curry is similar to an Indian curry but it has a thicker sauce. Its main ingredients are beef, goat meat or mutton but sometimes duck or chicken is used as a substitute.

The different types of meats create a unique flavor but goat meat is regarded as the most delicious.

Goat meat, usually plentiful in Cham villages, can smell bad if processed the wrong way. To remove this strong smell, people usually either make goats sweat by beating them and making them run around or they press acupuncture points on their body before slaughtering them.

Cha curry is considered delicious if it is very hot. This fire is created by combining fresh capsicums, chili powder and other spices. The fatty taste of coconut juice also makes the dish attractive.

The Cham-style curry is usually accompanied with rice vermicelli or bread, even though the best accompaniment is com ni.

Visitors to Cham villages in the Mekong Delta’s An Giang and Soc Trang provinces and the central region’s Binh Thuan and Ninh Thuan provinces should try Cha curry for themselves. It is great to sit on the floor of an airy stilt house to enjoy this Cham specialty.

Festival says happy birthday to Da Lat

A picture of the Grand Lyceé Yersin (now the Da Lat College of Education) taken by Tran Van Chau from a helicopter in 1960.
The famous Central Highlands resort town of Da Lat commenced celebrating its 115th birthday Wednesday with a cultural festival.

The five-day festival features many activities including exhibitions, art performances and sports competitions.

The Da Lat government said it would hold a vegetable festival to showcase various kinds of fresh vegetables grown in the area.

Also opened Wednesday was an exhibition named Da Lat xua va nay (Da Lat Now and Then) by the famous Xuan Huong Lake.

The exhibit features pictures, relics and documents which tell the 115-year history of Da Lat since it was founded by bacteriologist Alexandre Yersin in 1893.

Visitor Phan Thi Thanh Loan said the exhibit helped her verify the stories her grandparents told her about the town.

Another exhibition, which opened Tuesday, features 60 photos depicting the town’s immense beauty and history, as well as its development over time.

The photos, taken by renowned photographers including Nguyen Ba Mau, Dang Van Thong and French photographer Renaudin Esperance, depict spectacular mountains shrouded in the mist, imposing villas rising out of the lush foliage of pine trees and simple horse-drawn carriages.

Aerial photographs by US-based photographer Tran Van Chau are also on display.

Distinguished historian Duong Trung Quoc, Secretary General of the Vietnam History Association, said the exhibition offered a fascinating, cross-generational glimpse into the development of the charming town.

The event will run until December 21 at Sammy Dalat Hotel located at 1 Le Hong Phong Street in Da Lat Town.

HCM City lights up streets for upcoming Tet festival

Lights, flowers and fireworks will take centre stage on Ho Chi Minh City’s streets during the upcoming New Year and Tet (Lunar New Year) holidays.

The city’s central streets of Nguyen Hue, Le Loi and Dong Khoi will be lit for Christmas and New Year from December 18, 2008 to January 4, 2009 and for Tet from January 18, 2009 to February 14, 2009.

Nguyen Hue Street will host the Flower Street Festival on January 23-28, 2009 during Tet.

With this year’s theme of Vung Tin (Keeping Faith), local authorities want to show the city’s determination to overcome obstacles caused by the global economic crisis.

This year Nguyen Hue Flower Street will feature images of Vietnam’s traditional villages with bamboo and buffalo blending with nature’s sounds to depict a joyful spring.

On January 28, 2009 street performances of flamenco and traditional music will be held along Nguyen Hue and Le Loi streets, as well as traditional games.

Unlike previous years, this year the city will organise a contest to make banh tet (cylindric glutinous rice cake) on January 21 and 22, 2009.

The winning cake will be offered to ancestors at the Temple of the Hung Kings, and the Ho Chi Minh and Ton Duc Thang museums on January 25, 2009. On the event of Tet, the city will put on fireworks.

During the festival, the hotels managed by Saigontourist Travel will organise door-shows and hang exterior decorations to celebrate the holidays.

The city has also asked offices and households along the streets of Nguyen Hue, Le Loi and Dong Khoi to decorate their storefronts and homes.

The Flower Street Festival and HCM City’s annual holiday festivities have been organised by Saigontourst since 2004.

ASEM seminar on cultural diversity opens in Hanoi

More than 300 delegates from Asian and European countries gathered at a seminar in Hanoi on December 15 to share experiences regarding the preservation of cultural diversity.

The seminar, themed “Preserving and promoting the diversity of cultural expressions: sharing Asian and European experiences”, is the first of several Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) activities focusing on cultural diversity.

It is co-organised by the European Commission delegation to Vietnam and the Vietnamese Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST).

Addressing the event, MCST Deputy Minister Tran Chien Thang said that the two-day event provides an open forum for discussions on cultural expressions in order to preserve and promote identities in cultural diversity. Through the seminar, Vietnam wants to share its opinions and policies on cultural development.

Ambassador Sean Doyle, Head of the EC Delegation, spoke highly of Vietnam’s policies, saying that the Vietnamese Government’s commitment to join the UN Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions and make it a national policy would help ethnic groups to preserve their identities in a culturally-diversified environment.

According to UNESCO Representative Ana de Oliveira E. Silva, the cultural diversity will help countries to have more diversified outlooks on protecting and respecting others’ cultures and raise public awareness of cultural preservation and development.

The seminar will run until December 16, with speeches to be delivered by 30 speakers from Asian and European countries.

Cakes galore

Banh day (roll cakes) made in the Mekong Delta’s Tra Vinh Province
With all natural ingredients, these two traditional cakes from the south combine sweet and savory flavors.

Banh ong (pipe cake) and banh day (roll cake) are traditional dishes of the Khmer people in the Mekong Delta. They are made for special occasions and traditional Khmer festivals such as Ok Am-bok (Moon God Festival) and Chaul Chnam Thmey (New Year Festival).

The provinces of Tra Vinh and Soc Trang are well-known for making the delectable treats.

The pipe cake consists of rice flour, refined sugar, coconut flesh, juice and salt.

To make pipe cakes, the ingredients are mixed together to create a dough. The dough is then stuffed into bamboo or metal pipes about 20 centimeters in length and three centimeters wide. Next, the pipes are covered with tin lids and steamed in a saucepan.

When the cakes are well-cooked, they are removed from the pipes and placed on green banana leaves.

Nowadays, many people also use the juice from the leaves of dua thom (Pandanus amaryllifolius) plant. The leaves can be kneaded with flour to create fragrant green cakes.

Pipe cakes are eaten with a mix of salt and sesame. The sweet smell and rich taste of coconut juice makes the treat especially delicious, while the hint of salt adds a savory element. The cakes are meant to be eaten slowly and savored.

While the Khmer in Tra Vinh Province are famous for their pipe cakes, the Khmer in neighboring Soc Trang Province are renowned for their banh day.

This kind of cake is made from wheat flour, soft coconut flesh, sugar and peanuts, and is shaped into rolls.

Part of the fun is watching the expert cake-makers create the treats before your eyes. The cakes are best when eaten hot and fresh and cost just VND2,000 (11 cents) each.

Carving up the waves

A windsurfer rides the tide at Mui Ne beach
Adventure water sports are making a splash at beaches around the country.

“I always say that surfing is one of the most spiritual experiences I have ever had. I've found myself under a wave at sunset and looking at the setting sun through a wave, then I forget I need to breathe,” said Marc, who learned how to surf when he was 18.

Marc has been in the beach resort town of Mui Ne outside Phan Thiet Town with his wife and two sons for a week. He wants his two boys – Edward, 17, and Andrew, 15 – to experience the waves and wind at one of the most beautiful beaches in Vietnam while the family escapes the snowy winter in their home country of Britain.

Vietnam’s most famous surfing spots are Nha Trang beach and Phan Thiet’s Mui Ne, which attract thousand of surfers from around the world each year.

The areas are also popular for windsurfing. Unlike a rudder-steered sailboat, a windsurfer steers by tilting and rotating the mast and sail as well as tilting and carving the board.

Though windsurfing is possible in winds from 0-50 knots, the ideal conditions for most recreational sailors is 15-25 knots.

Kiteboarding is a popular and relatively new sport considered more adventurous as it can sometimes be more hazardous. Several dangers may be encountered while learning to kiteboard (some of which may not be immediately obvious), but can be minimized by taking professional instruction through lesson centers.

Tai, a trainer at Jibe’s Beach Club in Mui Ne, says “Most surfing clubs here provide courses and lessons of various skills including kite launching, flying, landing, usage of the bar, lines and safety devices.

A group prepares for a windsurfing lesson at Jibe’s Beach Club in Mui Ne

“A poorly executed maneuver will ‘fly’ the surfer,” Tai says, and this is often followed by a tumble if the surfer can't put the board down at the right angle. It is important to use safety equipment like a “deadman” system where the kite lines can be detached from the surfer's harness quickly as the kite can unintentionally power up and pull the rider under water or throw them against objects at uncontrollable speeds.

“Safety knives are a must to quickly cut lines in the event of dangerous entanglements. After a tumble, detangling and re-launching the kite can be difficult. Experienced kite surfers try to keep the kite in the air,” Tai adds.

“If the kite is only turned partially, or is not straightened at the right rate, a turning surfer can swing up and be dragged into the air by the kite, then get hurt when he re-contacts the surface. Even in water, flying a power kite can be a brutal contact sport. The kite is usually 20-27 meters (60-100 ft.) in the air, and a careless turn in high winds can easily swing the rider up to two stories in the air and down to an uncontrolled impact,” Tai says.

His colleague, Binh, says, “Controlled flying is possible and one of the biggest attractions of the sport, but more difficult and dangerous.

“The good news was that I figured out why you can tumble in the waves with a surfboard and not have it smack you in the head. Both you and the surfboard are about the same density as water. Therefore everything is always moving in pretty much the same direction. There's no reason for anything to smack into anything else,” Binh jokes.

But for his Australian student, Mary, surfing is the hardest sport she has ever undertaken.

“I ain't made for that kind of sport. I smashed like 1,000 times in an hour,” said Mary.

Another Australian surfer, Mark, said, “I never managed to stand up, and my belly kept getting in my way on the board. I smashed like 10 times in an hour because that was the best I could do. I must have looked absolutely pathetic. But it was fun.”

His girlfriend, Kate, said happily, “I went surfing today for the first time! It was awesome! I can’t stand up yet. I sort of got on my knees, wobbled a bit and then fell off but I caught some good waves lying down. It was so fast and cool – what a rush.”

“I had the same feeling when I first did it; couldn't get enough of it. It’s an amazing feeling when you stand up for the first time,” said overseas Vietnamese Daniel Tran. “You only really understand the power of the sea when you start to surf. It is a fantastic rush when you catch a good wave.”

Vietnam – key destination for Japanese tourists

Vietnam will be one of the key tourism destinations to be listed in Japan’s tourism promotion programme in the near future, according to the Japanese Association of Travel Agents (JATA).

Although Japan and Vietnam are struggling in the face of the global economic downturn, 400,000 Japanese tourists have visited Vietnam so far this year.

According to Vietnam Airlines’ vice representative to Japan Kieu Anh, the carrier has so far this year earned around USD 200 million from transporting Japanese tourists and goods from Japan to Vietnam.

Japan is currently the biggest market for Vietnam Airlines, which expects to welcome 440,000 Japanese passengers next year and 600,000 in the next three years.

The carrier has focused its efforts on boosting cooperation with Japanese travel agents and relevant agencies to hold cultural and tourism events to attract Japanese tourists to Vietnam.

The carrier now provides six direct flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to Japan’s four major cities, namely Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka and Fukuoka.

Conference to discuss urgent measures to attract tourists

A meeting to discuss urgent measures to attract international tourists was hold by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on Dec. 10, 2008, in Hanoi. Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Tuan Anh presided at the conference.

Attending the conference are leaders of Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) and representatives of the Ministry of Planning and Investment, Ministry of Finance, High Command of Border Guard...; General Director of Viet Nam Airlines and a number of foreign representative offices, leaders from 12 tourism departments in the cities and provinces which have big tourism potential and representatives of many travel companies, hotels, and other tourism-related companies; leaders of departments of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and VNAT; many journalists, reporters of the central and local magazines and televisions.

By the end of November, 2008 Vietnam had received only 3.9 million foreign tourists, making it hard for the country to achieve its target of welcoming 4.8-5 million foreign visitors this year. The delegates proposed several solutions for the short and long-terms in order to solve the difficulties and obstacles which effect directly or indirectly to the process of attracting, serving tourists come to Vietnam.

Stimulating domestic demand is one of the most important solutions to mitigate the global financial crisis’s impacts on tourism. Other measures include promotional activities, tax policies, and human resources and infrastructure development.

Concerted effort tries to save ca tru

Across the country, 17 provinces and cities are attempting to preserve ca tru (ceremonial singing), including clubs, classes and festivals.

Lecturer at the National Music Academy Pham Thi Hue has been a dedicated ca tru fan for many years. She founded the Thang Long Ca tru Club on Giang Van Minh Street, Hanoi. The club performs at most weekends and helps train young people to learn the art.

One rising star at the club is secondary school student Doan Linh Huong. "The more I hear ca tru, the more I like it," she says. "Whenever I listen to the phach (castanets), I feel the past coming back to life. I want to learn as much as I can from the teachers here and become a master myself."

It’s a similar story in the centre of Vietnam, in Ha Tinh Province’s Nghi Xuan District. The area is home to two ca tru clubs: Co Dam and Nguyen Cong Tru.

The centres offer free lessons on ca tru and dan day (a distant cousin of the guitar with a long neck and three strings). The music has been included in pre-school, primary and high school syllabi since 1998 as part of a project to preserve traditional arts through classes and social events.

The schools don’t just teach ca tru but also other types of traditional folk songs like hat vi (work songs), says Nguyen Hai Nam, director of the district cultural centre. "First, teachers are trained by artists and specialists, then they are ready to pass the skills on to their students," says Nam.

"A lot of teachers admitted they were sceptical about the project at first," he says. "They weren’t sure they could sing well enough and help their students learn the folk songs." But that was soon dispelled when the teachers saw how enthusiastic their students were, he adds. The project also includes annual folk song contests for students and teachers in the province.

The northern province of Hai Duong also includes ca tru on the school timetable and the province hosted the national ca tru festival in 2007. The top prize went to 18-year-old student Cao Thi Phuong Anh. Her sweet voice and a song composed by Nguyen Cong Tru won the heart of the jury.

"Learning ca tru at school is really good for us," Anh says. "It teaches us about our culture and gives us the chance to learn from people who know a lot about it." Anh began to learn ca tru when she was eight and took to it immediately. "I live in Nghi Xuan District, where ca tru originally came from, so maybe that’s why I find it so easy," Anh says.

Anh is a member of two clubs in Nghi Xuan District run by Director Nam including Nguyen Cong Tru and Co Dam. She performs ca tru every Saturday and teaches ca tru classes to younger students.

Free classes give universal access to the traditional art but more needs to be done to gain public interest, Nam says. "Authorities need to bring the arts closer to the people, not just ca tru. More traditional arts should be restored and given publicity." Despite efforts to promote and preserve ca tru, the Music Institute says there are only 17 veteran performers left in the country. If numbers continue to fall, ca tru runs the risk of disappearing into the history books.

It’s almost crunch time for one of Vietnam’s most treasured cultural traditions ca tru, as researchers try to get UNESCO to give the ceremonial songs official recognition as intangible cultural heritage. Experts from the Music Institute, under the National Academy of Music, have until March, 2009 to submit a background of ca tru to UNESCO. Musician Dang Hoanh Loan from the institute is on the case.

"I believe ca tru should be taught at university," he says. "Ca tru is not valuable simply as a genre of music, it’s also an important part of Vietnamese tradition and culture." "We need to send UNESCO a report, a photo album and a documentary film featuring performances of ca tru over the last few generations. Our report will include a list of well-known artists, development of young artists, activities involving ca tru last year and the restoration of ca tru."

T’nung Lake – an untouched charm of Pleiku

The central highlands of Vietnam embrace many mysterious charms. Tourists willing to get off the beaten path will discover pristine lakes and rivers, vast swathes of old-growth jungle, and isolated ethnic minority villages.

Any journey from Pleiku to Kontum should include a stop at T’nung Lake; the flooded cater of a millions of years-old volcano which now serves as the city’s reservoir.

T’nung Lake, also known as Ia Nueng, is located in Bien Ho Commune in the north of Gia Lai Province, about 7 kilometers from the heart of Pleiku City. The lake, surrounded by pine forests and mountain, is 230 hectares wide, expanding up to 400 hectares in the rainy season, and about 30 meters deep. In the early morning when the sun is still low in the sky the sun-beam reflect like a silver band on the lake.

T’nung is the name of the village. According to local folklore T’nung Lake was named after an ethnic village named where everyone lived happily together. One day a fierce quake erupted and destroyed the village, turning it into ash. When the fire was finally doused all that remained was a deep hole. The survivors stood besides the deep hole and cried, filling the hole with their tears and turning it into a lake.

The road to T’nung Lake is through a green canopy of pine trees. To satisfy curiosity, if contemplating the charms of the lake is not enough, tourist can take a thuyen doc moc (hollowed – tree boat or a dugout canoe) trip to explore hidden charms of the lake, to see their shadows on the pure and sparkling surface of the lake and to delve into the forest to discover magnificence of exotic lifestyles in harmony with wild nature. Here tourists will see the abundant and varied fauna and flora. Meandering around the lake, tourists can add to their fun with some fishing, and turtle watching.

The village is home to friendly ethnic people such as Bahnar and Jarai…, so tourists may stroll around the village to discover traditional customs and stay overnight to make a camp-fire and enjoy grilled fish that was caught in the lake with ruou can (wine drunk out of a jar through pipes) to experience the flavor and the soul of the uplands. T’nung Lake or Bien Ho (Sea Lake) was recognized as a national landscape by the Ministry of Culture and Information (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism now) in 1988. The lake remains unchanged, with a primitive charm that appeals to tourists.
