Binh Dinh hosts lantern gala night


More than 10,000 visitors converged on Thi Nai Lagoon on the evening of August 2 to take part in a lantern gala night as part of the Tay Son-Binh Dinh Festival.



The gala night included a special art performance, a fireworks display and the release of lantern on Thi Nai Lagoon. The art programme also drew the participation of artists from the Republic of Korea and Laos.

Twenty-two boats symbolising 22 years of the renewal process were mobilised to participate in the lantern display on Thi Nai Lagoon.

Hundreds of visitors released lanterns on the lagoon in the hope that the country will make greater achievements and people will enjoy higher living standards in the coming years.

The same day, a poem recital night was held at Genh Rang Hill in Quy Nhon City. Artists presented pieces composed by late poets Han Mac Tu and Xuan Dieu who had fond memories of Binh Dinh Province.

Student crowned Miss Tourism Vietnam


Phan Thi Ngoc Diem, a student from central Khanh Hoa Province, was crowned Miss Tourism Vietnam 2008 on the evening of August 2.



Ngoc Diem, who is now studying at the HCMC Foreign Trade University, surpassed 35 rivals at the final round to win a VND 100 million prize, including cash, an English language learning scholarship and a tour of Europe.

The girl will represent Vietnam at the Miss Tourism International contest to be held in 2009.

Nguyen Thi Minh Ngoc from the southern province of Ben Tre bagged the first runner-up title, while the second runner-up was Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao from the northern port city of Haiphong.

Launched in March, the Miss Tourism Vietnam contest, the first ever of its kind, drew the participation of more than 700 contestants from all parts of the country.

The event, co-hosted by the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism and the Asia Film Advertising Joint Stock Company, was seen as a chance to promote Vietnam’s cultural traditions and tourist sites to the world.

King Quang Trung’s merit highlighted at festival


A grand memorial service was dedicated to Hero Nguyen Hue in the central province of Binh Dinh on August 1, as part of the Tay Son - Binh Dinh Festival.



Nguyen Hue later known as King Quang Trung, together with his two brothers Nguyen Nhac and Nguyen Lu, and the Tay Son army had driven away the northern Qing invaders in a seven-day battle during the Lunar New Year in 1789 which is still celebrated in the country today.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan and Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Huynh Ngoc Son were present in the service, which drew the interest of thousands of local and foreign visitors.

It also included the offerings of flowers and incense to King Quang Trung at his monument and a temple dedicated to the three Nguyen brothers in addition to the performance of Tay Son drums and Tay Son martial arts.
